Scuffles broke out between riot police and protesters close to the Hellenic Parliament in Athens on Monday, as nursery school teachers protested a proposed law to lower the school starting age to four. Riot police used batons, shields and tear gas to ensure protesters did not force entry into the Parliament building."This law is a shame, because it means every government gets to decide about what will happen with children at this critical age," said one teacher named Maria Tranouli. The protest was organised by municipal nursery school teachers, the Federation of Municipality Workers (POE-OTA) and several students' unions.
