UK: MPs pipped to the post by journalists in Parliamentary Pancake Race

United Kingdom, London
February 13, 2018 at 14:32 GMT -00:00 · Published

A team of members of the British Parliament (MPs) took a beating by political correspondents who won the annual Parliamentary Pancake Race in the Victoria Tower Gardens outside Westminster in London on Shrove Tuesday, to raise money for the charity Rehab. Pancakes were vigorously tossed in the air by MPs and journalists, who battled it out to raise money for the charity event that has been celebrated since 1998. Funds raised from the event go towards Rehab's brain injury centres. "It feels like to me they [the MPs] might have eaten too many pancakes before the start of the race, so luckily we came through, being a bit more nimble and lithe," joked Political Editor of the Sun Tom Newton Dunn, who took part in the race. The event took place within the frame of Shrove Tuesday (known in some countries as Pancake Tuesday or Pancake day), a day which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes before the month of lent. The expression "Shrove Tuesday" comes from the word shrive, meaning "absolve". Shrove Tuesday is observed by many Christians, including Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists and Roman Catholics.
