Kenya: Police deploy tear gas as protests continue over media shutdown

Kenya, Nairobi
February 5, 2018 at 15:46 GMT -00:00 · Published

Police officers used tear gas to disperse a march in central Nairobi, Monday, as protesters rallied against the shut down of several media outlets.

The KTN, NTV and Citizen television channels have been off air for the last five days, after choosing to broadcast the symbolic ‘inauguration’ of defeated opposition leader Raila Odinga. The former prime minister has refused to accept last year’s presidential election result.

One protester, Fred Ogweno, said protesters wanted, "to pass our message to the government of Kenya that we have to expand freedom of speech."

The government ignored a court order last Thursday which suspended the media blackout of the privately operated broadcasters.
