Germany: Volkswagen workers stage 24-hour walkout at world's biggest factory

Members of the IG Metall union announced a series of 24-hour walkouts at numerous manufacturers in Germany, including Volkswagen and its plant in Wolfsburg, on Thursday.

Workers marched from their meeting point outside of the plant to the exterior of the world’s largest factory (by total area), waving union flags and banners.

Addressing the crowd, head of the worker’s council Bernd Osterloh said, "Volkswagen's business is booming, but it is not the merit of the management. That's your achievement." He added, "Our demands, which have been made in this collective bargaining round, are absolutely justified."

IG-Metall has threatened further strike action if its demands for an 8.0% pay rise and 28-hour reduced working week are not met.

Employers are seeking to reach a compromise in the dispute, which has been ongoing since January.
