USA: Dozens accuse Oakland bakery of glorifying Palestinian militant

Protesters rallied in front of Reem's Bakery, that features a mural of Rasmea Odeh, accusing it of "glorifying terrorist," in Oakland on Sunday. Reem's Bakery has repeatedly been targeted by pro-Israeli protesters for its mural of Odeh, who was convicted by Israel for her alleged role in the killing of two people in the 1969 Jerusalem supermarket bombing.

Protesters held placards reading "Reem's [bakery] glorifies violence" and "Honour the victims, not the killer," among others.

Protester Justin Rosenthal said the mural is "outrageous" and that it "glorifies a terrorist who killed two students, and they are raising money for terrorism is beyond imagination." Lara Kiswani of Arab Resource and Organising Centre stressed that "their claims are based on the fact that Reem [Assil] is a proud Palestinian, Arab woman, who also has a mural of a proud Palestinian Arab woman," adding that "we celebrate our political prisoners, we celebrate our heroes."

On Sunday, the cafe was hosting a lecture by author of the book 'Boycott! The Academy and Justice for Palestine.'

Odeh, a former US citizen and member of Palestinian resistance organisation Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was given a life sentence but was released in 1980 in a prisoner exchange, following which she immigrated to the United States. Defenders of Odeh insist her confession was coerced. In 2014, Odeh was convicted of immigration fraud and was sentenced to 18 months in the US federal prison, stripped of her US citizenship, and set for deportation to Jordan after serving her time.
