Russia: 'US don't want' Syrian territorial integrity - Lavrov at annual press conference

Russian Federation, Moscow
January 15, 2018 at 09:09 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said "what we see shows that the US don't want Syrian integrity," speaking at an annual press conference in Moscow addressing the events of the last 12 months.

The Russian diplomat commented on the situation in the war torn country saying that the Astana process was starting to boost the Syrian peace settlement after "the Obama administration failed to meet its promises to distinguish the opposition from Al Nusra and other terrorists."

Russia's top diplomat also added that it is still unclear if the US "were unable or didn’t want to suppress Al Nusra, we are still suspicious."

He added that at that time the UN also did nothing and Russia with Turkey and Iran decided to start a process based on the actual situation on the ground.

Lavrov also added that "attempts of our foreign colleagues to say that it's the Syrian army that is breaking agreements, are dishonest."

"The difference between the Obama and Trump administration is not significant," added Lavrov who said that in both cases there can be seen a will to help those who want to change the regime in Syria.
