State of Palestine: Women demand release of jailed soldier-slapping teen

Palestinian Territory, Occupied, Gaza City

The General Union of Palestinian Women gathered outside the headquarters of the Red Crescent in Gaza City on Monday to demand Israel release Palestinian activist Ahed Tamini and all other female prisoners.

During the demonstration, protesters can be seen burning flags of the Israel, the UK and US.

One of the protesters and member of the Fatah Revolutionary council Amal Hamad acknowledged the symbolism of Tamimi's case. "The message of Ahed Tamimi is a message of strength and determination and will win in the face of occupation. This is the Palestinian woman who is a leading model one the global stage".

In December, 16-year-old Tamimi was filmed slapping an Israeli soldier in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh. The video of the incident subsequently went viral.

Tamimi was later charged with assaulting security forces, incitement and throwing stones.

The case has polarised opinion on both sides of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Ahed’s celebrity led many Palestinian sympathisers to compare her to Malala Yousafzai or Joan of Arc. The Israeli side has requested a tough sentence from the judge, accusing the teenager of a long history of provocation
