Australia: Suspected N. Korean economic agent 'no threat to Australian community' - Police

Australia, Sydney

The Assistant Commissioner for the Australian Federal Police Neil Gaughan talked to the press in Sydney regarding the arrest of the 59-year-old Chan Han Choi, after he allegedly tried to broker illegal exports worth millions of dollars for Pyongyang, Sunday.

Australian Federal Police reported that the man was charged over two failed transactions and state that evidence shows he had been in contact with high ranking North Korean officials.

The suspect was attempting to transfer coal from North Korea to countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam, in what was described by the Assistant Commissioner as "black market 101."

The AFP Assistant commissioner stressed that there is "no involvement of these governments, nor involvement of officials from those particular countries, nor involvement of officials from those particular countries."

Gaughan said that "we are not suggesting that there are any weapons or missile componentry that came to Australian soil."

He also added that these kinds of activities prove that the sanctions to North Korea have some effect.

Investigations are ongoing.

Chan is reported to have been living in Australia for more than 30 years and is of Korean descent. He is due to face court on Sunday, where he could face a penalty of up to 18 years in prison.
