Jubilant crowds greeted the arrival of the motorcade of Zimbabwe’s soon-to-be President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, along Harare’s J Nyerere road, Wednesday, following the resignation of outgoing President Robert Mugabe.

Former vice-president Mnangagwa was in exile during the army’s takeover and the subsequent resignation of Mugabe, after fleeing to South Africa following his removal by Mugabe earlier this month.

Mugabe's resignation comes after the army seized control of the state broadcaster on November 15 and placed him under house arrest.

Mnangagwa's swearing-in ceremony will reportedly take place on Friday. He will serve the remainder of Mugabe's term, prior to elections.
