Sicilian Mafia "boss of bosses" Salvatore 'Toto' Riina was buried in his Sicilian hometown of Corleone on Wednesday morning. Riina, who died aged 87 in a prison hospital in the northern Italian city of Parma on Friday, received a private funeral in Corleone, the village near Palermo where he was born and where he took over the infamous Cosa Nostra crime syndicate in the 1970s. His coffin arrived in the Sicilian port of Palermo via ferry earlier in the day, and was driven to Corleone cemetery via a side entrance to avoid the media, according to reports. Only Riina’s widow, Ninetta Bagarella, and three of his four children – one of his sons is in jail for murder – accompanied the coffin, while police kept a cordon around the Corleone cemetery. Catholic officials ruled out a public funeral in a church for Riina, who along with all Italian Mafia members was excommunicated by Pope Francis in 2014.Cosa Nostra was believed to be Italy's most powerful mafia group in the 1980s and 1990s. Thought to have masterminded at least 150 murders, Riina was jailed in 1993 and was serving 26 life sentences. He reportedly suffered from kidney cancer, Parkinson's disease and a heart condition.
