Syria: SAA recaptures last IS stronghold Abu Kamal

Syrian Arab Republic, Damascus
November 9, 2017 at 17:46 GMT +00:00 · Published

After fierce battles, our forces have obliterated a huge number of terrorists, including top rank leaders in the terrorist organization. They are also still chasing the remnant of ISIS fighters, who have fled towards different destinations, to destroy them in the epicentres of terrorism in the desert.

After destroying their headquarters and equipment, our engineering unites are combing the city to remove the explosives in the neighbourhoods of the city.

The achievement of liberating Abu Kamal city is highly significant as it represents the beginning of IS project's collapse in the region, and the collapse of its sponsors' illusions that aims to divide the region. This achievement enables our forces to tighten its grip over large swathes of the Syrian-Iraqi borders, and secure the transportation roads between our two brotherly countries. This strategic achievement also represents a basis for destroying what have left of those terrorist groups with different names, through the whole land of the nation.

The General Command of the Army and Armed Forces, while saluting the souls of our martyrs and the heroism of our armed forces and their sacrifices to achieve this victory, stresses that the Syrian Arab army in cooperation with the paramilitary and allied forces, is determined to carry on his war against who remained from Islamic State terrorist organisation and other terrorist organisations until security and stability are restored to all over the soil of the Syrian Arab Republic."

Chief of the General Staff of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) Ali Mayhoub announced that the SAA "in cooperation with the paramilitary and allied forces, has liberated the city of Abu Kamal," in a televised statement from Damascus, Thursday.

Mayhoub stressed the significance of this achievement saying it "enables our forces to tighten their grip over large swathes of the Syrian-Iraqi borders, and secure the transportation roads between our two brotherly countries."

Regaining control over Abu Kamal "represents the beginning of IS project's collapse in the region, and the collapse of its sponsors' illusions that aims to divide the region," Mahyoub said.

Located on the Euphrates river, Abu Kamal was considered the last urban stronghold belonging to IS militants.

The SAA had recaptured Deir ez-Zor on 3 November, the last major city in Syria's desert region, pushing IS militants towards the Syrian-Iraqi border.
