The COP23 climate change summit got underway in Bonn on Monday, where speakers stressed on the importance of immediate action to reduce carbon emissions and hold onto the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement of 2015.

"We no longer have the luxury of time," Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change addressed the audience in the opening ceremony, adding, "We must act now. This right here, right now is where we begin."

On his end, President of the summit and Prime Minister of Fiji Frank Bainimarama stressed that the aim of the summit is to "use the next two weeks to get the job done."

"If we don't rise to the challenge, we will definitely fall short and expose our people to more risk, more destruction and more suffering," Bainimarama said.

German Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety Barbara Hendricks asserted that "the Paris Agreement is irreversible," and that "there is a point of non-return for humanity and we will reach this point if we disregard the temperature limit agreed at the Paris Conference of the parties."

The COP23 summit takes place under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is set to last until 17 November.
