Brazil: Protesters rise up against 'gay conversion therapy' ban overturn in Sao Paulo

Brazil, Sao Paulo
September 30, 2017 at 07:16 GMT -00:00 · Published

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of central Sao Paulo, Friday, to decry a Brazilian judge's decision to overturn the nearly 20-year-long ban on "gay conversion therapy."

The streets of the metropolis were swarmed with LGBTI demonstrators wrapped in Rainbow flags, carrying placards reading ""capitalism is sick". Protesters were also joined by a number of other groups, including antifa.

Last week, a federal judge in the capital of Brasilia Waldemar de Carvalho overruled a decision taken by the Federal Council of Psychology in 1999 that prohibited licensed psychologists to offer therapeutic treatments able to "convert" patients identifying as LGBTI, a move which has ignited a fierce wave of protests.

More protests are expected to take place on Sunday.
