Russia: FIFA visits Saransk stadium under construction for World Cup 2018

A joint delegation of FIFA and Local Organizing Committee Russia-2018 (LOC) arrived in Saransk to inspect the readiness of the Mordovia Arena football stadium in the run-up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, Friday.

The members of the delegation, which included Vladimir Sushkov, head of the government of Russia’s republic of Mordovia, and Colin Smith, FIFA Chief Competitions and Events Officer, gave a short press-conference.

Saransk is actively gearing up to host matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The stadium’s construction is still underway. According to Vladimir Sushkov, the stadium will host its first match 21 April 21 next year.

Alexey Sorokin, LOC Chief, said that the stadium on schedule to be completed in December.

Mordovia Arena has a 45,000-seat capacity and is hosting four group stage matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The delegation came to Saransk on the sixth operational visit aimed at inspecting stadiums in the run-up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. From September 26 to October 5, the delegation is to visit sport arenas located in eight cities across Russia, which are hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches. The cities are Moscow, Kaliningrad, Ekaterinburg, Samara, Saransk, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don and Volgograd.
