Switzerland: Cannot equivocate white supremacists and their opponents - CERD chair on Charlottesville

Chairperson of UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) Anastasia Crickley criticised the official US response to the right-wing violence in Charlottesville earlier this month, when speaking in the UN's Geneva buildings on Wednesday.

Alluding to a statment made by US President Donald Trump after the death of anti-fascist protester Heather Heyer, where he said there was an "egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides." Heyer died when a white supremacist protester drove into a crowd of counter-protesters.

Crickley responded to Trump's version of events by saying, "You cannot compare white supremacist and racial discrimination. You cannot compare activities which support those with activities that are concerned to protest against them. You can't equivocate between them in our view."

Speaking on behald of CERD, Crickley a broader view to the issue of race relations in the United States: "We felt disturbed is the word that we used by the failure at the highest political level in the USA to unequivocally condemn the racist violent events and demonstrations by those right-wing, Nazi - neo-Nazi - and white supremacist groups which had, we felt also, potential to fuel racist discourse."

She then went on to say that comments made by the US President "Had the potential to have people feel that they have permission to be racist. We don't feel that permission should be available in any country."
