Russia: Resolution of Palestine-Israel conflict 'cornerstone problem' - Lavrov

Russian Federation, Moscow
August 21, 2017 at 15:32 GMT -00:00 · Published

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stated that talks between Moscow and Cairo had revealed "several areas of agreement" in working towards the resolution of regional challenges in the Middle East, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, at a press conference held alongside his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, in Moscow, Monday.

Shoukry noted that his discussions with Lavrov had revealed "several areas of agreement and the importance of working on resolving regional challenges within the Middle East," key to which he said is "the Palestinian issue," which according to the Egyptian diplomat "continues to be the central issue in the region." He went on to say that Cairo and Moscow "seek a full and fair resolution, based on the two-state solution," which he said "would end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

The Egyptian foreign minister also reported that the two diplomats had discussed the situation in Syria, Libya and Iraq, noting the importance of "joint efforts so as to ensure stability and achieve the common goals of both countries."

In turn, Lavrov echoed Shoukry's sentiments, saying that both countries have "a common stance" that unfolding processes in the Middle East and North Africa "should not divert attention" from the settlement of the Palestine-Israel conflict, which he called "a cornerstone problem."

The Russian foreign minister also noted that the two countries consider it "very regrettable" that it has not been possible to implement the UN decision "on the establishment of a zone free of weapons of mass destruction" in the Middle East, adding that Moscow and Cairo are "actively cooperating" on the implementation of the accord on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in the region.
