UN: We are at 'tipping point' - Palestinian envoy urges UNSC action over holy sites access
The Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Riyad Mansour, warned that the al-AQSA compound crisis is at "tipping point" due to Israel's "reckless and destructive agenda," during a meeting of the body in New York City, Tuesday.
In turn, the Israeli Ambassador, Danny Danon accused "Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has publicly endorsed the payment of salaries to convicted terrorists and their families."
The US ambassador to the body, Nikki Haley, refused to be drawn on the matter but said she hoped for a resolution where "wisdom prevails over emotions."
Instead Haley focussed largely on the role of Hezbollah and Iran in the Middle East, while criticising the repeated emphasis on Israel during meetings.
"Truth be told, the United Nations Security Council makes the Middle East more complicated than it actually is and obsesses over Israel and it refuses to acknowledge one of the chief sources of conflict and killing in the Middle East, and that is Iran and its partner militia Lebanese Hezbollah," Haley told the council.
Violence has spread across Israel and Palestine, after Israeli officials installed, now removed, metal detectors and extra security cameras in the al-Aqsa compound following the shooting of two Israeli police officers at the site earlier this month in a gun-fight, in which three Arab-Israeli shooters were also killed. This has led to further clashes, resulting in the deaths of three Palestinians during confrontations with Israeli security forces on Friday, according to media reports, as well as the fatal-stabbing of three Israelis at home in a West Bank settlement.
