Iraq: Mosul locals try to stay afloat as city recovers from battle against IS

Iraq, Mosul

Citizens of the newly liberated Mosul expressed their day-to-day struggles and concerns for the future, Wednesday, as they attempt to return to everyday life in a city recovering from the long battle against militants of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS).

“People want to live in Iraq, they don't want to leave Iraq,” Nasser, a resident of Mosul said, before he added, “But people need compensations, their homes were destroyed. Who will make this up for them?"

Another resident, Ahmad el-Rahhal, said that the citizens only wanted “basic issues” such as electricity and water. “Our demands are only rights,” he commented, pointing to the depleted services and infrastructure in the city.

On 10 July, Iraqi forces declared the full recapture of Mosul from IS, following an offensive fronted by the Iraqi army and backed by US-led coalition forces that began October 17 last year.

Since 2014, some 900,000 civilians have been displaced from Mosul, which constitutes about a half of the city's pre-war population. A new US report from Operation Inherent Resolve officials confirmed that a total of 603 civilian deaths had been killed so far during the US-led air campaign in Iraq and Syria.
