Norway: Nobel laureates speak on life on Earth and beyond at Starmus

World's leading experts including Nobel laureates discussed some of the biggest questions facing scientific inquiry and gave some insight into mankind's future on Friday, wrapping up the final day of the Starmus International Festival in Trondheim.

Neuroscientist and Nobel laureate Edvard Moser talked about his discovery of cell that are equivalent to brain's GPS system, "There is a structure in the brain in the medial temporal lobe which is behind your ears which is called the hippocampus. It's a structure that about this high like your thumb and you have one on each side. This structure is important for memory but it's actually at the same time is a part of the positioning system."

Canadian biologist Paul Hebert argued that "establishment of the global biosurveillance system" will provide "the kind of insights we need to better manage life on the planet" as well as "make it possible for the humanity to finish this long test, this 250 year task of registering life on the planet, within 20 years."

Neuroscientist and Nobel laureate Susumu Tonegawa added that predictions made by science fiction writers are indeed becoming reality as "we can now even engineer memory cells by optogenetics" making it possible to manipulate "memories, thoughts, and emotions."

Echoing Stephen Hawking earlier presentation, astronomer Jill Tarter urged to accelerate the search of signs of intelligence existing elsewhere in the universe. Her proposal was to focus on detecting cosmic technologies, "We don't actually have to understand what that technology might be for and in fact it might be something that we can't imagine it might be like magic," she added.
