UK: 'We need to deal with the ideology of hate' – Muslim leader following mosque attack

Religious leader Yousif al-Khoei said it was crucial to address the rise of Islamophobia and he condemned the media for its portrayal of the attack at Finsbury Park Mosque in London on Monday morning, stating that because the attacker was white he was not automatically called a terrorist.

"There is a problem, where the incident is carried out by a non-Muslim, it is treated somehow differently in the media," al-Khoei said.

The Director of Al-Khoei Foundation in London stressed that the Muslim community must not live in fear. "We must really work together as a community to deal with this disease amongst, in our societies, the rise of extremism, right-wing extremism, and extremism in the name of religion," al-Khoei said.

Al-Khoei is also the Director of the Centre for Academic Shi'a Studies and frequently works on interfaith initiatives. He stated that in order to stop the rise of Islamophobia, communities must work together.

"We need to have communities along with us to deal with this disease, we need to deal with the ideology of hate, which these extremists seem to enjoy," he said.

Police have confirmed that at least one person was killed and 10 others injured in the incident. One person has been arrested.

Police are treating the incident "as a potential terrorist attack," Prime Minister Theresa May said.

The attack occurred as a van reportedly veered off the road into worshippers outside the Muslim Welfare House in Seven Sisters Road, after Ramadan evening prayers.
