UK: Theresa May hits constituency polling station to cast ballot

United Kingdom, Sonning
June 8, 2017 at 08:34 GMT -00:00 · Published

British Prime Minister arrived at Sonning CE Primary School polling station on Thursday to cast her vote in the 2017 UK general election as the British electorate head to the polls nationwide.

May was joined by her husband Philip May, and greeted by a heavy police presence. Fathers' rights activist Bobby Smith was also among the crowd outside the Sonning polling station, as well as a person dressed as the Sesame Street character Elmo.

Over 40,000 polling booths opened at 07:00 local time, and will close at 22:00, with some 46.9 million Britons registered to vote.

The 2017 general election follows May's call on April 18 for a snap election to take place, with 650 Westminster MPs set to be elected in Thursday's vote. Wednesday's final polls from market research company Youguv gave the Conservatives a seven-point lead over Labour.

However, other pollsters have called tighter odds, with research group Survation putting the opposition at 40.4 percent, and the Conservatives at 41.3 percent. In the same survey, the Liberal Democrats polled at 7.8 percent, the Scottish National Party (SNP) at 3.6 percent, the UK Independence Party (UKIP) at 2.4 percent, and the Green Party at 2.3 percent.
