Belgium: Trump 'clear on his commitment' to NATO but 'blunt' on spending demands - Stoltenberg
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that US President Donald Trump was "clear on his commitment" to the alliance but was "blunt" on demands for an increased defence spending by the NATO allies, at a press conference, in Brussels, Thursday. Stoltenberg noted about Trump's commitment to the alliance despite the fact that the US president declined to explicitly affirm NATO's Article 5, the mutual-aid clause of the treaty, at the NATO summit earlier in the day.
Stoltenberg noted that "Trump has been clear on his commitment to NATO" and "clear in the message to all allies that we have to deliver on the pledge we made, to increase defence spending" before adding that the US president "was blunt on that message today." He added that "it is absolutely possible to have an ambitious message on defence spending and at the same time have a positive message."
The NATO secretary general also stressed that the alliance "does not seek confrontation with Russia" but delivers "credible deterrence on defence." He added that "we recognise that Russia is our biggest neighbour" and that "we are striving for better and more constructive relationship with Russia."
