The ballet shoes of the famous ballet dancer, actor and choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov were sold for one million roubles (€16,505; $17 694) at a charity auction in Moscow on Wednesday.

Baryshnikov, who also made a recurrent appearance on US television series Sex and the City, donated his ballet shoes to the Russian charitable foundation named 'Finding Opportunity' to be sold at a charitable evening titled 'Art for life's sake'. The main goal of the event was to raise funds for the restoration of the Chaika rehabilitation centre that helps people with disabilities.

The shoes were sold for a million roubles to Susanna, who represented an anonymous buyer at the auction.

The woman outlined that she is "very glad that he did it, because in my time I graduated from the choreography formation, the name of [Mikhail] Baryshnikov is known to me from childhood" adding that "I do not just understand, I feel who he is, what contribution he has made to the Russian ballet, and I am glad that these ballet shoes will stay in Russia".

Baryshnikov was born in Riga in 1948. He began his career in the USSR, but eventually left the Soviet Union due to personal and creative reasons, joining the American Ballet Theatre in New York City.
