Russia: Uzbek president offers condolences to families of St. Petersburg blast victims

Russian Federation, Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Moscow on Wednesday, to discuss security in the region and ongoing efforts to ensure peace and stability in Afghanistan, which borders Uzbekistan to the south.

Putin stated that "Uzbekistan’s position in the region is important to us, especially regarding tensions from neighbouring countries, including Afghanistan."

Mirziyoyev began by offering his condolences to the friends and families of the victims of Monday’s St. Petersburg Metro blast: "What happened in St. Petersburg hurts all of us. Terror has no border, it has no nationality. Once again, I say that we need to take very tough measures together," said the Uzbek leader.

With reference to Afghanistan, Mirziyoyev stated that peace in the country "is particularly important for Uzbekistan" and that the Uzbek government "will support everything that Russia does in Afghanistan," and will participate in multilateral consultations on Afghanistan that will take place in Moscow on April 14.

Putin and Mirziyoyev are scheduled to hold a joint press conference later on Wednesday.
