Russia: Passer-by recounts blast in St. Petersburg metro station

Russian Federation, St Petersburg
April 3, 2017 at 15:23 GMT -00:00 · Published

A St Petersburg resident who was travelling by metro during the blast, which rocked the St. Petersburg metro network on Monday afternoon, recounted her experiences during the incident.

She recalled, "I was travelling by the metro with my headphones in. [Following the incident], I saw that people seemed worried and were checking their phones. Then my friend sent me an SMS, asking me where I was. I replied that I was travelling by metro. Then he told me that some explosions had taken place [in a metro train]. At first, I thought [the explosions were caused by] some packages, but when I was passing through the Vosstaniya Square, I saw sappers, or however one calls them, working on the scene. Then I found out that there were casualties."

At least 9 people were reportedly killed when an explosion occurred on a St. Petersburg metro train, affecting the neighbouring stations of the Institute of Technology and Sennaya, at around 14:40 local time (11:40 GMT).

St. Petersburg Metro department has closed all subway stations in the city, in the wake of the incident. Russian President Vladimir Putin was in St. Petersburg on Monday, to attend a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in the Union State Supreme Council.
