Colombia: 43 children among dead in Mocoa mudslides – Santos
The Colombian President Juan Santos spoke from Mocoa, Sunday confirming that 43 children were among the 254 dead following Saturday‘s fatal mudslides in city.
Santos who travelled to the town himself to see the devastation warned that the death toll would likely rise. Some 400 people are injured and hundreds still missing.
Heavy rains in the Putumayo province caused the Mocoa river and its tributaries to overflow and mud and gushing water to rush through the city destroying homes and infrastructure and dumping hundreds of tons of debris.
