Russia: 'Read my lips, no!' – Putin on alleged US election meddling

Russian Federation, Arkhangelsk
March 30, 2017 at 14:56 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an emphatic response to a question on Russia's alleged interference in the US presidential elections, while participating in a panel discussion at the International Arctic Forum in Arkhangelsk, Thursday.

As the discussion’s moderator, CNBC journalist Geoff Cutmore, asked whether Russia "never tried to influence the outcome of the US presidential election and there will be no evidence found", Putin resolutely replied: "Read my lips, no!"

The Russian leader also discussed the current Russia-US relationship, saying that is was already "on zero", as the turnover between the countries "is $20 million, and it was $27 million" last year. He also compared the treatment of the ambassadors to Russia and US, saying that Russia did not obstruct the activities of the US Ambassador to Russia, but that "the activities of [the Russian] ambassador to the United States are limited". "Any meeting is perceived disapprovingly, as some kind of espionage activity," he added.

The panel discussion was held between Putin, Icelandic President Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson and Finnish President Sauli Niinisto.

The two-day International Arctic Forum brings together international organisations, government bodies, and scientific and business communities from Russia and around the world, to consolidate efforts to ensure the sustainable development of the Arctic and to improve living standards in the region.
