Iraq: Mosul residents describe 'nightmare' of fleeing airstrikes for IDP camps

Journalist (Arabic): "You mean killed by airstrikes?"

IDP camp resident (Arabic): "Yes, so many airstrikes. So many airstrikes…"

IDPs who were forced to flee their homes in Mosul as US-led coalition airstrikes continue to pound the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) described, Tuesday, what led them to escape the fighting and life at a camp on the city’s outskirts.

One of the residents said that "it took them 20 days to get here," while many of the family members were killed by militants. "ISIS is here, we are here. We can't find anything to eat. It is all too distressing. I can't take it anymore," he added.

On Saturday, United States Central Command spokesperson confirmed they carried out a strike in Mosul at a location "corresponding to allegations of civilian casualties" and had opened an investigation.

The military operation against IS in Mosul began on October 17 last year. IS captured the city in 2014 and the offensive is now fronted by the US-led anti-IS coalition and the Iraqi army, who have been carrying out airstrikes in the city. Thousands of Mosul residents have been forced to flee the fighting as the campaign escalates.
