Russia: Urgent UNSC meeting requested over civilian deaths in Mosul – Lavrov

Russian Federation, Moscow
March 27, 2017 at 13:48 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he had requested a special briefing at the UN Security Council over the escalating humanitarian situation in Mosul, speaking at a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano in Moscow, Monday.

Commenting on the US-led coalition's aerial bombardment in west Mosul which allegedly left scores of civilians dead, Lavrov said: "The bombardment lasted for several hours and if during those hours it was impossible to make sure that you were striking the wrong targets, than it is quite strange for me to see such actions from the US military."

He went on to say that of course Russia was "interested in the liberation of Mosul from terrorists" but urged the coalition to conduct more "cautious" and "precise" strikes in order to avoid civilian deaths.

Lavrov referred to Russia’s humanitarian corridors in eastern Aleppo "which helped to save many lives."

On Saturday, United States Central Command spokesperson confirmed they carried out a strike in Mosul at a location "corresponding to allegations of civilian casualties" and had opened an investigation.
