Hong Kong: Thousands of protesters rally against 'fake' Hong Kong elections

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Hong Kong, Saturday, to denounce what they consider to be a "fake" election predetermined by Beijing, one day ahead of the Chief Executive polling in China's special administrative region.

The protesters marched from Causeway Bay, one of the biggest epicentres of 2014’s Umbrella Revolution, to Wan Chai, the area where the closed-circle Chief Executive electorate will be meeting on Sunday morning to cast their ballots.

Civil Human Rights Front leader Au Nok-Hin explained to the media that he called this rally to raise public awareness for what he considers to be a rigged election. "Whatever any candidate will be elected, this is not democracy," Au stated, adding that "this is only a small circle election. That is why we wanted to have an assembly to show that we want universal suffrage. This is the basic consensus for democrats."

On Sunday morning, a pre-selected 1,194-member electorate committee will take to the main polling station at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre to pick the Special Administrative Region’s fourth chief executive. A candidate needs at least 601 votes to win, but the outcome of the race is widely seen as pre-determined by China’s Central Government.

This election is surrounded by controversy for being the first since 2014’s Occupy Central protest, also known as the 'Umbrella Revolution.' For about 80 days, hundreds of thousands of protesters blocked the streets to demand a 'one man, one vote' system for Hong Kong.
