UK: Crowds pay respects to late Sinn Fein politician Martin McGuinness in Belfast

Scores attended a vigil for former Deputy First Minister and Sinn Fein politician Martin McGuinness in Belfast on Tuesday, holding candles and saying prayers for the ex-IRA leader.

One of the mourners addressed the crowd, saying "Martin was a revolutionary, he was a freedom fighter, he was a civil rights activist, he was an equality advocate, he stood up for respect for all, he was a peace builder, he was a leader and he was all of those things because he was a Republican, and I think it's important that people remember that. It wasn't in spite of, it was because he was a Republican, and he believed in the ideals of those Republicans that went before him."

Continuing with her eulogy for McGuinness, she added "And he made the commitment even in those hours when he was ill that he will continue with his political activism, that he would continue to be an ambassador for unity, for peace and reconciliation. And when I think of the words of Bobby [Sands] - we are those children. It's clear that we need to fulfill the laughter of those children, because we are that generation that will see us through the unification of our country and building true and lasting peace and reconciliation. And a large part of that is down to the role that Martin McGuinness has played in the Irish peace process."

McGuinness died at the age of 66 in the Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry.
