USA: Al-Abadi seeks ‘stronger relationship‘ with Trump as travel-ban rift recedes

United States, Washington DC

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he sought to "develop" US-Iraqi relations "not only on the military and security fronts," in a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington DC on Monday.

Al-Abadi's visit comes as Iraqi troops, along with the US-led anti-IS coalition continue the military operation against self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Mosul. "There is a common goal, your troops are with our troops, your officers train the Iraqi forces" said al-Abadi," going on, "I imagine we should build a stronger relationship."

Trump hailed the role of his Secretary of Defence General James Mattis in this push and questioned decisions made by the previous administration. "Mosul was ours until we left. So perhaps we shouldn't have gone in and certainly we shouldn't have left. We should never ever have left."

Al-Abadi thanked the US President for reviewing the first executive order, signed on January 27, which barred travellers from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the US. He called the revision, which removed Iraq from the list „a push forward to our relations."
