Serbia: Corrupt, but very honest about it - spoof politician Beli is shaking up presidential race

Serbia, Mladenovac
March 19, 2017 at 18:16 GMT -00:00 · Published

Serbian presidential candidate Ljubisa Preletacevic Beli was greeted with open arms by citizens in his hometown of Mladenovac, Sunday, as the parody politician upped the ante for his presidential election campaign.

The young and eccentric ‘politician’ became a celebrity in Serbia after running in local elections as an openly, and quite happily, corrupt wheeler-dealer with a fake university diploma, who often tells voters "My interests first, and then the interest of citizens."

The real name of the satirical character of Ljubisa Preletacevic Beli is Luka Maksimovic. He created the caricature to mock Serbia's political system. His nickname "Beli" means "White" whilst his surname "Preletacevic" translates to "defector" referring to politicians who change their political allegiance according to which one offers them the best personal gain.

The surprise candidate managed to gather some thirteen thousand signatures from supporters to enter the presidential race, helped by his team of creative friends who are attempting to bring some freshness to Serbian politics.

His political career started at local elections in Mladenovac in 2016, where he won second place, just behind the Serbian Progressive Party of current Prime Minister of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic. His civil movement 'Samo Jako' (Hit it Hard) has 12 councillors in Mladenovac’s local assembly.

The presidential elections in Serbia will be held on 2 April 2017. Eleven candidates will participate, including Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.
