Australia: Melbourne taxi drivers protest decreasing license compensation 'favouring' Uber

Taxi drivers protested on the steps of Melbourne's Parliament House on Monday, over new ride-sharing regulations which would allegedly see planned government compensation for taxi licenses significantly lower than previous years. The protesters claim this would benefit ride-sharing app Uber.

The government is offering taxi license holders $100,000 (€72,777) for their first license and $50,000 (€36,388) for subsequent licenses, reports say. In contrast, the 2016 market price stood at $150,000 (€109,165) per license, while taxi drivers could get $275,000 (€200,137) for a license in September 2015, reports add.

Protester Anthony Parisi decried the decision, saying "Now for the government to come in and say 'we just simply, the landscape's changed and we're just going to make way for these people at the expense of you guys' - it's unfair and it's not even humane."

Minor altercations occurred when two men heckled the protesting group, but police prevented an escalation of tensions by distancing the hecklers.

Additionally, around 80 taxis took on some of Melbourne's busiest motorways in peak hour traffic, filling up the lanes and driving slowly, attracting anger of other commuters who reportedly used the emergency lanes to circumvent the convoy.
