Ukraine: Savchenko visits Ukrainian POWs in Makiivka

Ukraine, Makiivka
February 24, 2017 at 23:56 GMT -00:00 · Published

Former Ukrainian servicewoman and current Verkhovna Rada Deputy Nadezhda Savchenko arrived in Makiivka on Friday to meet with Ukrainian prisoners of war.

Savchenko was accompanied by the head of the Ukrainian Center for the release of prisoners dubbed 'Officers Corpus' Vladimir Ruban. Savchenko told reporters she had come with the purpose of freeing the Ukrainian prisoners of war, stressing, "I urge the leaders of the Normandy format to exchange all the prisoners which have been confirmed by them."

In December 2016, Savchenko met with the leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics in Minsk causing a wave of criticism in her address. She was later excluded from the fraction of the All-Ukrainian Union 'Fatherland' [Batkivshchyna] party and removed from the Ukrainian delegation to Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

In March 2016 the former servicewoman was sentenced to 22 years in prison after being convicted for the murder of two Russian journalists, Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin, in Ukraine's Lugansk Region, and for illegally crossing the Russian border. Savchenko was pardoned by President Vladimir Putin in May 2016, after he signed a decree in exchange for two Russian citizens who were detained in Ukraine last year and sentenced to 14 years in prison on terrorism charges.
