Hong Kong: Thousands rally to support police officers sentenced for assault
Thousands of protesters rallied at the Prince Edward Police Amusement Fair in Kowloon Tong on the island of Hong Kong, Wednesday, in a show of support for seven police officers who were sentenced to two years in prison last week for assaulting a pro-democracy activist during the 2014 Occupy protests.
The seven police officers were convicted and sentenced last week for causing actual bodily harm to Civic Party activist Ken Tsang. They were acquitted of grievous bodily harm with intent. According to the Chief of the Police Association, the protesters numbered around 33,000.
Protesters gathered en masse at the Police Sports and Recreation Club football pitch in Kowloon Tong, where they chanted "I support police" and wore white to symbolise 'pure police.' Demonstrators included police officers and former police officers who were showing their support to the families of the seven who were arrested.
The seven officers were caught on film dragging Tsang to a darkened corner near a protest site, where they then beat him. The incident occurred on October 15, 2014, which was during Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests.
