UK: US citizen burns his passport as 20,000 decry Trump's 'Muslim ban' in London

More than 20,000 people marched through the streets of London, Saturday, to condemn UK Prime Minister Teresa May's refusal to cancel the planned state visit of US President Donald Trump to the UK, despite Trump's so-called 'Muslim ban'.

The protesters rallied outside the US embassy before proceeding to march towards Downing Street, all the while holding placards and banners denouncing Trump and May.

One demonstrator burned his US passport in front of the US embassy in protest against Trump's travel ban.

Renowned activist Salma Yaqoob, who was present at the protest action, described May's political behaviour as "flagrant" and "divisive" while arguing that "history will definitely prove that she was wrong" and that "this was the time to stand firm and hold onto principles." She noted that it "would [not] have cost her [May] too much politically. So the moral cowardice in what she has done and in her complicity is actually all the more damming."

The British opposition has also heavily criticised May for her relationship with the new US President and her response to the immigration ban.

Trump signed an executive order on January 27 which bans citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from entering the United States for 90 days, suspends the US refugee programme for 120 days and indefinitely blocks Syrian refugees from entering the US.

Trump has maintained that the restrictions should not be dubbed a 'Muslim ban,' despite them only being brought into effect for these seven countries, all of which have a majority Muslim population.

Seattle Federal Judge, James L. Robart, issued a temporary nationwide ruling against Trump's travel ban, Friday, but it is not yet clear whether it will be implemented.
