Austria: Exhibition on Russian charity and Red Cross opens in Vienna
An exhibition 'Charity in History: Contribution of Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fedorovna to the Activities of the Russian Red Cross Society' opened its doors to visitors at the United Nations offices in Vienna, Wednesday.
Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of The Grand Duchess Elisabeth and Grand Duke Sergius Enlightening Society, Anna Gromova said that the exhibition would also be shown in other European capitals. She commented on the activity of the Russian Red Cross since the beginning of the 20th century, saying that "it performed the functions of EMERCOM".
The exhibition provides historical material about Elisabeth and the functions of the Red Cross Society. 'The Grand Duchess Elisabeth and Grand Duke Sergius Enlightening Society' and International Committee of the Red Cross collected the photos and archive materials, which reflects the first years of the foundation.
Russian Emperor Alexander II established a 'Community for Care for the Sick and Wounded Soldiers,' which later grew up to the 'Russian Red Cross Society.' The Grand Duchess Elisabeth was the head of the Women Red Cross Committee in Saint Petersburg and in 1909 established the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Moscow.
The Grand Duchess Elisabeth and Grand Duke Sergius Enlightening Society was established in 2011 to preserve the memory of Elisabeth and to continue the traditions.
