Iran: Iranian missiles not designed to carry nuclear warheads - FM Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stated that Tehran's ballistic missiles "serve the purpose of the legitimate defence of Iran, [and] thus fall outside the purview of the UN Security Council's Resolution 2231," at a joint press conference with his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault in Tehran, Tuesday.

During the press conference, Zarif also stated that Iran would "never use its ballistic missiles to attack another country" while stressing that its missiles were not designed to carry nuclear warheads.

Zarif's statement comes following a US official's claim that Iran had test-launched a medium-range ballistic missile that allegedly exploded after travelling 1,010 kilometres (628 miles) on January 29. Zarif neither confirmed nor denied the claim.

Ayrault, who is presently on a two-day official visit to Tehran, has reportedly voiced concerns over the alleged Iranian missile test, stating that it could undermine confidence in Tehran's compliance with the nuclear deal as well as with UNSC Resolution 2231. However he reportedly said that France would defend the nuclear accord despite threats by US President Donald Trump to scrap the deal.

On January 16, 2016, sanctions placed on Iran were lifted after the United Nations confirmed that Tehran had fulfilled its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, is an agreement signed in Vienna on July 14, 2015, between Iran and the United States, the UK, Russia, China and Germany. The deal imposes limits on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the removal of sanctions against Iran.
