Russia: No military solution to the Syrian crisis - Putin speaking to King of Jordan

Russian Federation, Moscow
January 25, 2017 at 19:48 GMT +00:00 · Published

President Vladimir Putin and the King of Jordan, Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein expressed their commitment to the peace talks held in Astana as a "good basis" for the upcoming talks in Geneva. Both leaders met in Moscow on Wednesday just one day after the negotiations on the Syrian conflict concluded in the capital of Kazakhstan.

President Putin praised King Abdullah II "for the support" of Jordan during the Astana process. "Through our common efforts the process is developing on the basis of a very significant decision that was reached – the cessation of hostilities," said Putin. He emphasised that the participants agreed there was "no military solution to the Syrian crisis."

King Abdullah II pointed out the role of Moscow in the peace talks saying, "Without Russia, we will not be able to find solutions to not only the Syrian problem but other regional problems in the Middle East". The Jordanian monarch also expressed his hope that the Astana forum and the decisions made there will bring "an inclusive future to all Syrian people".

The peace talks in the Kazakh capital took place on Monday and Tuesday. The negotiations were brokered by Russia, Turkey and Iran, whose representatives reportedly met with delegates from both Syrian government and opposition parties ahead of the talks. According to Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov, the three states agreed on the establishment of 'a trilateral mechanism to observe and ensure full compliance with the ceasefire' apart from other decisions dealing with peace settlement in Syria.
