Kazakhstan: 'We are not far from a final declaration' – UN's de Mistura on Syria peace talks

Journalist (English): "If there is any extension of the talks? Or is it going to be over today?"

Staffan de Mistura, United Nations Special Envoy for Syria (English): "I think it should be over today. We are working hard enough."

United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, stated that intra-Syrian peace talks were "not far from a final declaration," while speaking to press on the second day of International Meeting on Syrian Settlement in Astana on Tuesday.

He said: "we are not far from a final declaration. There has been a lot of work done on it. If the one we are seeing is going to take place, there is some optimism but we have to wait until the last moment. We are working hard for a declaration that can reassure that the process of the actual cessation of hostilities becomes more solid. And that is what we are working on."

De Mistura stressed that "every moment is important because until the last moment before the final negotiation comes out, there are very intense discussions because this is not about a paper, is about cessation of hostilities which means saving lives."

International Meeting on Syrian Settlement, which kicked off in Kazakh capital on Monday, was the first of its kind between Syria's government and armed opposition in just under a year, with the talks focused on consolidating a cessation of hostilities that has been in place since December 30.

The negotiations were brokered by Russia, Turkey and Iran, whose representatives met with delegates from both sides ahead of the talks.
