Serbia: Refugees bussed out amid freezing conditions in Belgrade

Serbia, Belgrade
January 17, 2017 at 17:08 GMT -00:00 · Published

More than 200 refugees and migrants were bussed to a newly opened refugee camp in Obrenovac, some 32 kilometres (19,8 miles) from Belgrade, Tuesday, as the Serbian capital and its outskirts continued to be affected by sub-freezing temperatures.

According to the recent UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reports, more than 1,200 men, including up to 300 unaccompanied or separated boys, live in Belgrade's parks and abandoned buildings without electricity, running water or basic conditions for hygiene. Humanitarian organisations have voiced their concerns that asylum seekers could perish due to the freezing climate if adequate housing and resources are not provided on time.

Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Aleksandar Vulin, claimed that "we, unlike other countries along the [Balkan] route, ensure adequate housing, and we do it in the way which no other country does." Vulin also noted that smaller reception centres had been set up "to keep them comfortable, to ease the controlling procedures and provide food, medicine, justice and other types of protection."

The action was organised by the Commissariat for Refugees and the City Center for Social Work.
