Germany: Ball now in Russia's court over 2018 Paralympics suspension, claims IPC

The ball is apparently now "in the Russian Paralympic Committee's court," regarding Moscow's participation in the Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, claimed International Paralympic Committee (IPC) media director Craig Spence, Thursday. Speaking from the IPC's headquarters in Bonn, Spence was giving an update on developments regarding Russia's ongoing suspension from international Paralympic competitions.

Spence's comments come on the same day that the IPC Task Force held a meeting in London where Russia's participation in the 2018 Games was being discussed.

The task force will reportedly be "reviewing some documentation that came from the Russian Paralympic Committee on Wednesday…. and then they will be filing a report for the IPC Governing Board to consider at the end of this month."

Spence stated that the Russian Paralympic Committee was well informed about the necessary criteria to be followed. "They know the timelines they need to achieve in order to have the suspension lifted before the next games," explained Spence.

One of the criteria includes Russia's laboratory being credited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). He underlined that IPC wanted "the rest of the athletes to be confident that there is a level playing field for all the athletes".

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) suspended the entire Russian Paralympic team from participation in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, held between September 7 and 18. The decision was announced by IPC President Philip Craven on August 7, 2016. Russia remains suspended from future international Paralympic competitions.
