Syria: Russian aid distributed at Jibreen refugee camp as ceasefire begins
The Russian Centre for Reconciliation of the warring parties in Syria delivered humanitarian aid as well as presents to children at a refugee camp in the village of Jibreen, Friday, after a ceasefire deal came into effect at midnight.
Military personnel distributed hot meals, bread and tea to refugees who had gathered near a field kitchen. Afterwards the children received presents and sweets which were sent by Russian citizens, some of them coming from children of Orenburg. The humanitarian operation was monitored by a battalion of military police of the Russian Ministry of Defence, which arrived in Syria a week ago.
The ceasefire came into effect at midnight local time (22:00 GMT, Thursday) on December 30, after President Bashar al-Assad’s government and militant fighters agreed to a deal brokered by Turkey and Russia. This agreement is said to exclude the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, (formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra) and affiliated groups.
