Russia: Putin supports reduction of Russian forces in Syria as ceasefire announced
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow would begin to reduce its military presence in Syria, speaking during a debriefing on the Syrian peace process with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in Moscow, Thursday.
Putin said that he agreed with the proposal of Russian Defence Ministry to reduce the size of Russian forces in the region, but underlined that Russia "will unconditionally continue to fight against international terrorism and will continue to support the legitimate Syrian government." Putin also called on the Syrian government, the armed opposition and all countries holding influence in the conflict, to support the agreements that were reached and to take part in upcoming talks in Astana.
Lavrov expressed his hope that the new administration of US President-elect Donald Trump would "join the efforts [on the Syrian conflict settlement] in order to channel this work into one direction based on friendly and collective cooperation."
Earlier in the day, Putin announced that three documents would be signed in a bid to bring the Syrian crisis to a conclusion: a ceasefire agreement between the Syrian government and the armed opposition, measures to fully implement the ceasefire and a declaration of commitment to start peace talks.
The natiowide ceasefire will come into force in Syria at midnight local time.
