Russia: Russia banned from hosting IBU World Cup and Junior World Cup

The press-secretary of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) said that it is too early to say whether the measures taken by the International Biathlon Union (IBU) are dictated by politics or not, during an interview in Moscow, Thursday.

Konstantin Boytsov said: “We made ourselves familiar with the decision of the IBU and plan to cooperate with them during the investigation. Only when the results of this cooperation [will be announced] will we be able to say whether politics was involved or not.”

Boytsov also commented on the decision of IBU to shift "the venue of the IBU World Cup stage and the Junior World Cup, which were initially to be held in Tyumen and Ostrov, in the Pskov region.” He said that in the present situation, since the IBU launched an investigation against the RBU and 29 biathletes were mentioned in the McLaren report, the RBU agreed to reschedule the venue.

The IBU made a statement in connection with the accusations against the Russian biathletes mentioned in the final version of Richard McLaren's report, which was released on Thursday evening in Munich, Germany. The statement says that the IBU's executive board also decided to launch an investigation against the RBU and 29 Russian athletes, who, according to McLaren's report, might be involved in doping fraud probes between 2011 and 2015. The cases of another two sportsmen are investigated by IOC as they took part in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.

However, the IBU decided not to suspend the RBU’s membership, which would mean banning all Russian biathletes from international competitions.
