Russia: Lavrov calls Karlov assassination 'barbaric crime' as Iran shows solidarity

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the "barbaric crime" committed against Russian ambassador Andrei Karlov was a "reminder" to people "that the fight against terrorism should be uncompromising and ruthless". He was speaking at a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Moscow on Tuesday, shortly after bilateral talks with Turkish top diplomat Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Sergei Lavrov emphasised that "if the organisers of this terrorist act pursued the aim to break the fight against terrorism as a whole and our today's meeting in particular, they will not succeed." He added that despite the death of the Russian diplomat Moscow, Tehran and Ankara will "determine effective and concrete steps that our states could take to normalise the situation in Syria."

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif pointed out that "today places and geography do not matter for terrorism. And this is a threat for the entire world and we should fight it together." He added: "We hope those states that supported terrorism would realise the size of this problem and stop supporting terrorists."

Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, was making a speech during the opening ceremony of a photo exhibition called 'Russia as Seen by the Turks' when a gunman opened fire on him. The perpetrator reportedly fired several shots, hitting Karlov in the back and wounding three others. Andrei Karlov died of his injuries.
