Head of Aviation aircraft carrier group of the Northern Fleet, holder of the Order of Courage and Hero of Russia, Igor Matkovski spoke on his military career on Heroes of the Fatherland Day, on the deck of the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov, located in Mediterranean Sea, Friday. The carrier was the launch site of Sukhoi Su-33 jets that were carrying out missions in Syria.

"Indifferent people does not come to this profession. Once fell in love with this profession, you take it completely and forever," explained Matkovski. The soldier continued, stating "I looked at my father, was proud of him, knew the courage and honour of this profession. He was killed in a fighter cockpit. This moment, my life finally acquired real colours and I no longer in my life regret about the chosen path."

Matkovski is one of the most experienced naval fighter pilots of the Armed Forces, having made 244 landings on the deck of the cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov. In his current role he acts as chief of aviation for the Northern Fleet, which involves preparing younger fighter pilots to perform combat missions to the highest of their ability.

He was awarded the title of Hero of Russia in 2008 for his courage and heroism on military duty.
