Brazil: Police disperse thousands of protesters before public spending cap vote

Brazil, Brasilia

Police used tear gas to disperse protesters outside Brazil's National Congressin Brasilia, on Tuesday, as the Brazilian government voted on a controversial bill that would see public spending frozen for twenty years.

Brazilian President Michel Temer's government has experienced a lot of opposition to economic and social reforms that they are attempting to introduce throughout the country. The public spending cap is seen by Temer's opposition as a harsh austerity measure.

One protester criticised the current government, led by Temer, as illegitimate, saying, "I think that we are experiencing a political coup since we have a president that was not voted by the people." On Sunday, Brazil's Socialism and Liberty Party filed a petition for Temer's own impeachment - although the petition is unlikely to be accepted and, instead, will be taken as a gesture of protest against the current administration.

While the protests were going on in the capital, the Senate voted - 61 to 14 - to approve the constitutional amendment that would freeze to the rate of inflation for 20 years. Health, Education and debt payments are not to be included in the spending cap.

A final vote on the amendement is due to take place on Tuesday, December 13.
