Cuba: ‘We feel the loss’ - Mourners pay respects to 'El Comandante' in Havana

Hundreds of Cubans filled Revolutionary Square in Havana on Tuesday to pay their respects to the late Cuban revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro.

Mourning citizens remembered the effect Fidel had had on their lives and iterated the significance of his death. One woman retold her story, explaining that coming from a poor peasant family, they were able to move to Havana, adding, “my husband became a mechanical engineer, one of my daughters became a nurse, the other one became a computer technician and for this reason I owe too much to 'El Comandante.'"

Another man expressed his grief, stating: "we feel the loss. 'El Comandante' was a figure - I said it many times, - for everybody in the world. I can't explain this moment with words, this grief that our country is suffering.”

Castro passed away at the age of 90 in Havana on Friday, prompting emotional responses from both supporters and detractors worldwide. His ashes will be interred in the Santiago de Cuba at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery on December 4.

Castro was a key member of the Cuban Revolution. He and his allies ousted the authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista in 1959, before going on to found a Cuban socialist state.

Castro served as prime minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as president from 1976 to 2008, in which time he survived geopolitical tensions and scores of US assassination attempts. In 2008 he handed the reins of power to his younger brother Raul and slowly withdrew from the front-line of Cuban politics.
